Dalmatia - region of natural, cultural and historical heritage

Church of St. Donatus in Zadar

Dalmatia (i.e. South Croatian littoral) is the biggest touristic region of Croatia. The north border of Dalmatia is Kvarner, while the south border is Konavle, i.e. cape Ostro, which is also the southernmost point of Croatia. Dalmatia includes great majority of Croatian islands and two (out of three) Croatian peninsulas.

Except warm sea, beautiful beaches, delicious Dalmatian prosciutto and wine, Dalmatia offers lots of cultural, historical and natural landmarks. One of the most known is the church of St. Donatus in Zadar, which dates back to the 9th century and is venue of the well known festival of medieval renaissance music named “Musical evenings in St. Donatus”. When you are walking on Split' streets, take your time and visit Diocletian’s palace, built by the Roman emperor Diocletian around 300 A.D. Since 1979 the palace is added to the UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage.

Dubrovnik

Definitely one of the most famous cities in Croatia is Dubrovnik. During the medieval period Dubrovnik used to be a city-state. Since 1979 the Old city of Dubrovnik is added to the UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage. Some of the most known landmarks in Dubrovnik are: The Old city, Rector’s palace, the church of St. Blaise and Stradun – Dubrovnik’s main street. Very well known are also many festivals, which take place every year. Worth to mention is definitely Dubrovnik summer festival.

Besides rich cultural and historical heritage, Dalmatia is also known for its natural beauty. In Dalmatia you can find four out of eight Croatian national parks and four out of eleven nature parks. National parks are: the Kornati islands, the Krka river falls, north-western area of the Mljet island and Paklenica. Nature parks are: Biokovo, Telescica, Vrana lake and the Lastovo islands.
