Krka National Park

Krka National Park is one of eight national parks in Croatia. It is located in central Dalmatia region, just a few kilometers from the city of Sibenik. On the area of 109 sq km you can find many lakes, waterfalls, caves and archeological findings. An integral part of the national park is the Krka river, after which the national park got its name. The Krka river springs at the foot of the Dinara mountain and drains into Adriatic sea in the Sibenik bay.

Uniqueness of the Krka national park are seven travertine waterfalls, which are natural and karst phenomena. The highest and the most beautiful is the Skradinski buk waterfall, which is also the last and the longest travertine barrier. It is located 13 km downstream of the Roski slap waterfall and 49 km downstream of the Krka spring. Very beautiful is also Roski slap waterfall with its many small cascades at the beginning. The main waterfall is located at the end of the barrier where the Krka river falls into Visovac lake.

Approximately hundred caves and pits are found along the Krka river; forty of them are located within the area of the national park. The longest caves are found within the area of the Miljacka slap waterfall and many of plant and animal species live there, including some endemic species.

Many of cultural and historical monuments (archeological findings, sacral heritage monuments and industrial architecture monuments) are to be found within the national park area. Archeological findings dates back to all historical periods, from prehistory to medieval times. Very interesting to see are recent findings of old Roman military camp with amphitheater, which date back to the 1st century and ethno village.

In 1895 a hydroelectric plant on the Krka river was built. This was the oldest hydroelectric plant in Europe and the second oldest in the world (it started operating only 3 days after the Niagara hydroelectric plant).
