Eastern Croatia - adventure of golden plains & ethno villages
Eastern Croatia is part of Croatia placed on the very east of the country. Includes Slavonia region, southern Baranya region and western Syrmia region. It is the area of Pannonian valley and former Pannonian sea. It is mostly lowland area with fertile fields, vegetable gardens, greenhouses and orchards, where locals produce many varieties of fruits, vegetables and grains.
Magic charm to those endless fields give numerous ethno farm households in ethno villages. Decorated in vintage style, they offer a touch of past to their visitors. Here you can taste authentic Slavonian cuisine, homemade wine or “rakija” (Slavonian brandy), or you can simply join your hosts and have a little work with them in their vegetable garden or orchard.
If you would like to visit some of the sight-seeings, you can take a trip to Kopacki rit – the oldest Croatian nature park rich with flora and fauna. Definitely, the most beautiful mountain in Eastern Croatia is the Papuk mountain. Big part of it is, together with a part of the Krndija mountain, declared as a nature park. Slavonian mountains (the Papuk mountain, the Krndija mountain, the Psunj mountain, the Dilj mountain and other Central Croatia mountains) used to be Pannonian sea' islands. In Pannonian sea used to live many extinct plant and animal species; among them was also a shark bigger than the great white shark.
In Osijek, the city on the right coast of the Drava river, you can explore rich historical and cultural heritage. Well known is Osijek's old city named Tvrdya, built mostly in 18th century. If you decide to take a walk, do it in Osijek, because Osijek is the city with the most green areas in Croatia. Very well known is also authentic Slavonian music, which you can find only in this area of Croatia.
If you dream of vintage style of holidays, Slavonia region is the right place for you.
