Croatia's best islands

Because of its many islands, Croatia is often referred to as “the land of a thousand islands”. Croatia has 1246 islands located in Adriatic sea. The islands are quite different. Smaller or bigger, inhabited or uninhabited, located in Kvarner Bay or Dalmatia region… every one of them will thrill you on its own way.
Lonely Planet made a list of the Croatia's best islands. Here it is...
1. Island of Hvar
The island of Hvar is, when it comes to Lonely Planet, number 1 among Croatian island. It is the most luxurious and the most sunniest island of all and, along with Dubrovnik, the most popular touristic destination on Croatian coast. And if you care about being seen, this is definitely the right place for you.
2. Island of Mljet
The Mljet island is one of the most seductive islands on Adriatic coast. Much of the island is covered by vegetation, while the northwestern part is protected as national park. According to a legend, Odysseus survived a shipwreck on the Ogygia island (for which is believed to be the Mljet island). Nymph Calypso detained him there to be her lover for seven years. You can also find Odysseus cave on the island.
3. Island of Vis
The most mysterious island in Croatia is the island of Vis. Until end of Yugoslavia, Vis was quite isolated, what preserved its authentic nature. Bloom of the island begins after collapse of Yugoslavia and now you can see it in its finest nature. On the Vis island you can taste some of the best Croatian wines and some of the freshest seafood, thanks to a still-thriving fishing tradition.
4. Island of Korcula
Number four among the best Croatian islands is the island of Korcula. Its rich vineyards, olive groves, small villages and old town will blow you away.
5. Island of Cres
Cres has wild and natural allure that is intoxicating and inspiring. Its sparse population, dense forest, craggy coastline with magical cliffs, hidden coves and ancient hilltop towns will leave you breathless.
6. Island of Brac
There are two main things the Brac island is specially known for: Brac's white stone, from which Diocletian's Palace in Split and the White House in Washington, DC are made and Zlatni Rat beach, the long pebbly beach at Bol, which changes its form by wind.
7. Island of Krk
One of two biggest Croatian islands is the Krk island (the other one is the Cres island). This island gets particularly busy during summer as well. The Krk island is easy place to visit. It has good transport connections and infrastructure.
8. The Brijuni islands
The Brijuni islands ae a group of islands and islets in Adriatic sea, located northwest of Pula and just across Fazana. The Brijuni islands consist of two bigger islands and twelve smaller islets, total area of 33,9 sq km. The Brijuni islands are one of eight Croatian national parks and have rich flora, fauna and sea life.
9. Island of Pag
Island of Pag is like something you'd find in a 1950s Italian movies – barren, rocky ground with vast and empty landscapes stretching across the horizon. Crystal blue sea is the saltiest in Croatia. Well known products like Pag salt, Pag cheese and Pag lace are produced here. And if you wish to have some fun, mega popular Zrce beach is right there.
10. Island of Lokrum
Island of Lokrum is located only 0,5 Nm southeast of Dubrovnik. It is a gorgeous, forested place of holm oaks, black ash, pines and olive trees and an ideal escape from touristic Dubrovnik.
